In Sierra Leone, foreign trawlers fish illegally within the area restricted for local fishermen, causing overwhelming destruction to marine biodiversity as they take everything in their path. 75% of the catch is thrown back into the sea dying while local fishermen struggle to catch fish on which they and their families depend to survive.
EJF is making an urgent appeal for donations to support our in-country programme in Sierra Leone. The programme will empower and enable community action (monitoring of illegal fishing activity and reporting information to the navy) to faciliate arrests and peacefully drive away the illegal trawlers that threaten their local environment and livelihoods.
“The children need to eat to grow, and they are underfed …if the trawlers don’t go we cannot survive. We are dependent on the waters and the fish, and if they go we have nothing else.” Rugiatu Fullah, Women’s leader in mosque, Borhol Ngai

EJF have been set the challenge of raising £1,000 pounds in one month (April 2009)for our Save the Sea project in Sierra Leone. If we reach this target we will achieve a permanent place on the GlobalGiving UK website which offers EJF a real hope of raising the £12,218 needed to develop the programme detailed on the site.
Please give generously to this project and support our work in Sierra Leone
GlobalGiving is an online marketplace that helps overseas development charities raise funds and awareness for their charitable projects, the US version of the site has raised over £10 million for over 800 projects over the past 4 years. As the figures clearly show earning a permanent place would be a great way for EJF to raise essential funds to protect coastal communities and the marine environment in Sierra Leone. We just need your help to get us there first and as always every penny counts!
Every donation that will be made to Johnny's Sea World will be donated to this project of EJF... we really hope that everybode can see the need to stop Pirate Fishing in Sierra Leone and give many donations, This really needs to be stopt as soon as possible.
