France condemned for using driftnets
The ending of the use of driftnets in the Mediterranean Sea.
EJF commend the fact that the European court of justice has condemned France for illegal fishing with driftnets in the medirerranean Sea.
Driftnets have been banned for use in the European Union since 2002 but dispite that France and Italy have repeatedly been exposed by various organisations that they are still using these illegal driftnets. You can see here below how driftnets work and that these nets will kill every fish that swims in it.
The european Commission has finally in 2007 denounced France for not controlling or inspecting the illegal use of the driftnets. and for not taking sanctioning measures against the offending vessels. The European Court of Justice has with this ruling finally clossed the case against France, at this moment there is a similar process against Italy and hopefully they wil get a simular rulling.
